Cultural Issues Programme
TUESDAY 22 OCTOBER, 1400 - 1700

Letting Go
From the personal level to the level of international relations, ideas about dealing with the past in a way that liberates us to build the future are very much in the air. Understanding the factors that facilitate 'letting go' and 'closure' are of great interest to therapists, psychologists and mediators. Great institutions like the Roman Catholic Church recognise the need to acknowledge wrongs in the past. Former colonial nations are beginning to accept responsibility and apologise for suffering caused to indigenous peoples. To what extent may these ideas offer a way forward to persons, groups, societies and nations forced into conflict by their histories? South Africa is the outstanding example of a nation's attempt to recreate itself upon a foundation of truth and reconciliation.

The panel will explore the psychological advantages, pitfalls and limitations in such a process, and consider if these ideas are culturally determined by the beliefs of Christianity and Western psychology, or if there are parallels in other societies, particularly in native African culture and traditions, of conflict resolution and mediation?

Further, the panel will also discuss whether such processes could be useful in earlier stages of conflict, for example in the Middle East, the Balkans and Northern Ireland.
