A SPECIAL PROGRAMME FOR GUESTS
TUESDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 0900 - 1200
CULTURAL ISSUES PROGRAMME
The human face of ICT (information and communication technology)
How far can the remarkable growth of ICT be harnessed for social good? The potential for ICT to touch lives of individuals and communities expands almost daily.
One important example is the impact on personal and community health issues with the growth of medical information websites, internet medical consultation, access to medication etc. ICT can open up important medical resources to individuals in the developed world and to developing communities worldwide. What are the positive and negative aspects of this broad access to medical information?
Are the impressive new opportunities opened up by the ICT explosion outweighed by the creation of a growing rift between the 'information rich' and the 'information poor', whether individuals, communities or nations?
In this session, we will explore the current efforts by governments, non-governmental organisations and businesses to harness the potential of ICT for the wellbeing and advancement of people throughout the world in the light of questions such as these.
