Chinatown discovery - a walking excursion
(Approximately 3 hours)

0900 - 1200 Sunday 14 September
0930 - 1230 Tuesday 16 September

Discover Chinatown on foot! In downtown San Francisco, the present has been built over the remnants of the past. This is especially true of Chinatown. From the towering steel and concrete of San Francisco's financial district, you will pass the historic Lion Gates and be transported into the 'city-within-the-city', which recalls the days of early Chinese immigration. The first Chinese settled on these streets during the Gold Rush and were swiftly followed by thousands of others. Today, San Francisco's Chinese population is one of the largest outside Asia.

You will walk down Grant Avenue, the bustling, exotic main street of Chinatown, whose many shops specialise in everything from rare jade, ivory and silk, to back scratchers and wind-up Godzilla toys.

You will meander down mysterious back alleys that recall the long-ago days when opium dens flourished in this area. Herbal shops, offering jars of ginseng root, alternate with Chinese groceries, whose windows display smoked ducks. Aromas from innumerable Chinatown restaurants combine with the sounds of many Chinese dialects spoken. Chinese language movie theatres and newspapers complete the illusion of a visit to Hong Kong.

At the end of the day, the motorcoach will return you to the San Francisco Marriott.

PRICE: $32 per person
(Based on a minimum of 35 participants)

Excursion includes:
  • Transportation to and from Chinatown via deluxe motorcoach
  • Narration and walking tour given by professional, uniformed guides
  • Any required admission charges or donations to temples

Historic San Francisco
(Approximately 4 hours)

1300 - 1700 Sunday 14 September
1300 - 1700 Tuesday 16 September

At a youthful century and a half, San Francisco packs more excitement into her relatively short history than do many venerable cities hundreds of years old. From her peaceful pre-incorporation days as a sleepy Spanish outpost, to the bawdy years of the Gold Rush, through the tremors of the 1906 Quake, and the ensuing architectural remodelling, through the groovy 1960s, and into the present cutting-edge; San Francisco has never had a slow moment.

San Francisco is a relatively small city, yet there is a lot of substance contained in the small area. The 49 square miles of the City are a colorful tapestry of steep hills, picturesque houses, clanging cable cars, fishing boats, summer fog, Chinese pagodas, international cafes, and breathtaking views: five continents and two centuries blend together on forty three hills, waiting to be discovered. Today you will see some of the legendary historic landmarks of 'Everybody's Favourite City'!
  • The majestic Golden Gate Bridge and breathtaking view of the bay from Vista Point
  • San Francisco Cable Car Barn, home and central operating point of the City's historic cable cars
  • Spanish Mission Dolores - located at this spot of the as-yet unnamed San Francisco
  • Portsmouth Square - San Francisco's first public square
  • Hyde Street Pier, home to several historic boats from the bay area's rich maritime history
  • Historic Cliff House, the last of three, overlooking the Pacific Ocean
A famous writer once declared, 'Everyone should be allowed to love two cities - his own, and San Francisco'. Today you will discover for yourself why this is true.

PRICE: $36 per person
(Based on a minimum of 35 participants)

Excursion includes:
  • Transportation via deluxe motorcoach
  • Narration by professional, uniformed guide
  • Admission to all historical sites

Magical Marin

(Approximately 4 hours)

1230 - 1630 Sunday 14 September
1000 - 1400 Wednesday 17 September
0900 - 1300 Friday 19 September

Today you will cross the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge into fabled Marin County, with its astonishingly varied land and seascapes. Drive along the slopes of Mount Tamalpais, thread down the winding mountain road to Muir Woods National Monument.

One of the first parks ever set aside for the coastal redwoods, this national park was named for the renowned conservationist. The giant sequoias located here have a biological ancestry dating back well over a million years. Fossils of virtually identical trees appear on record from 160-170 million years ago, the Jurassic Age of dinosaurs. These fossils are found across the Northern Hemisphere, in Manchuria, France, Alaska, Greenland and even on Arctic islands. Redwoods have no aging mechanisms, are extremely resistant to disease, and have few natural enemies. Thus individual redwoods can live to be thousands of years old. You will have time to wander among these ancient trees, and will come away with a sense of the immense grandeur and spans of time encompassed by this noble forest.

Next you will visit sparkling Sausalito, a Riviera-like bayside village with its winding wooded streets, eclectic houseboats, unique boutiques and art galleries. There will be ample time to explore the shops and galleries, or simply stroll along the waterfront and view the San Francisco skyline and bay.

PRICE: $37 per person
(Based on a minimum of 20 participants)

Excursion includes:
  • Transportation via deluxe mini-coach
  • Narration by professional, uniformed guide
  • Admission fee to Muir Woods
  • Time to shop and browse in Sausalito
Please Note: This tour must be operated using a mini-coach. Local ordinances prohibit the use of motorcoaches on the road to Muir Woods.

Alcatraz: 'The Rock'Today you will be 'sentenced' to a 'short term' on the notorious Alcatraz Island Federal Penitentiary.

The coach will take you to the San Francisco waterfront, where you will have a short ferry ride across the waters of the bay to 'the Rock'. Here you will visit the cells once occupied by some of the nation's most infamous and incorrigible criminals. On this austere wind and fog swept island, it is easy to see why few attempts were made to escape into the treacherous bay with its undertows and turbulent waters.
